Glenn Gould’s Obsessive Quest for the Perfect Piano. By Katie Hafner.

グレン・グールドのピアノの探求について書かれた本A Romance on Three Legsが出版されましたが、著者Katieが香港に来られレクチャーされました。

The book is written about Glenn Gould, one of the most famous pianists of the twentieth century who played a Steinway CD318. The author Katie Hafner was present along with Verne Edquist, an octogenarian nearly blind Canadian piano technician who was Glenn Gould’s personal technician.

20世紀で有名なピアニスト、グレン・グールドはスタインウエイ CD318を弾いていました。このピアノを調整していたグールドのピアノテクニシャン、ヴァーンさんとグールドのことが書かれた本です。ヴァーンさんも一緒に来られました。このおじいちゃんのピアノテクニシャンは、ほとんど目が見えません。

The special event was held at City Hall concert hall where I met both the author Ms Hafner and Mr Edquist who is a highly respected piano technician. It was wonderful to meet Mr Edquist who shared his life experiences. The piano fairy of CD318 was there too!

この特別なイベントはCity Hallで行われ、ヴァーンさんにお会いでき、彼の人生の経験を目の前で実際にお話をお聞きすることができるなんて、とっても感激でした。本当にすばらしい1日となりました。CD318のピアノフェアリーも一緒に来ていました。

ヴァーンさんと息子さんのエリックさんです。鋭い感覚をお持ちの方ですが、とても穏やかで優しい方でした。終わってから気さくにお話してくださり、一緒にお写真も。私はうれしさのあまり、ちょっと緊張してしまいました（笑い）

After that, there was a computerised presentation of Glenn Gould himself playing his famous Goldberg variations on an actual piano. This was played on a special YAMAHA CF III with DISKLAVIER PRO from Japan presented by Dr John Q. Walker. This unique concert gave us the experience how Gould played the music complete with pedaling. The CF III was quite new and has a brilliant sound. It was brought from Japan especially for this event. The piano fairy and I enjoyed the presentation.

この後、日本からこのイベントのために特別に持ってきた DISKLAVIER PROの搭載されたYAMAHA CF IIIを使って、コンピューターテクノロジーで実際にグールドのレコーデイングからこのピアノでバッハ・ゴールドベルグを再現しました。グールドが実際にどのようにペダルを使ったのかまでわかります。日本の技術はすばらしいですね。そして、新しい CF IIIはとてもブリリアントな音でした。なんだかとっても幸せな1日をピアノフェアリーと過ごしました。
